As we turn our clocks back Sunday, and see fewer hours of sunlight during the day, GoTriangle urges all commuters to be extra cautious and safe whether you are driving, waiting for a bus, walking or biking.

“Safety is always our top priority and as more people travel to and from work and school in the dark this time of year, we urge everyone to slow down and be aware of your surroundings. Drivers, walkers, bikers and people waiting at transit stops can all do their part to help keep everyone safe," said GoTriangle General Manager Jeff Mann.

Studies from Carnegie Mellon and the National Road Safety Foundation find that pedestrians walking around dusk are nearly three times more likely to be struck and killed in the days following the end of daylight saving time. Auto accidents also increase after the clocks fall back an hour.

GoTriangle is joining with bicycle safety and advocacy groups in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Durham to promote a fall campaign called “Lighten Up” with safety tips for bike owners, cyclists, drivers and pedestrians.

The web site at: http://gotriangle.org/lightenup has the safety tips along with a list of bike shops in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Durham that are helping to promote the campaign with printable coupons to make sure you have the latest safety gear for this fall.

GoTriangle offers safe, reliable, and easy-to-use travel choices including bus, bike, walking, carpool, and vanpool.  More information is available at www.gotriangle.org.
